Court Officer Unions Get Backing on Disability Bill

PAC News
November 1, 2019

As you know, COBANC has been pursuing an Accidental Disability Bill for the past five years that would provide Peace Officers in the Court System a 3/4 disability pension if they were unable to return to their jobs as a result of an assault or other disabling injury on the job. This would put us on par with Police Officers, Firefighters, Sanitation Workers and Correction Officers who all have the three-quarters disability benefit. Currently, Peace Officers employed by the Court System get one-third of final average salary as their disability pensions which is insufficient to live on.

This bill has passed both the Senate and Assembly. For the first time, this September, we had an opportunity to meet with the Governor's Office to discuss this legislation. And, also for the first time, Chief Administrative Judge Lawrence K. Marks wrote a letter of support, outlining the "crucial functions" we provide in terms of security and "the inherent hazards" we face. Judge Marks wrote that his office "urges approval." The meeting and letter of support were facilitated by the efforts of our lobbyist, Peter Meringolo, who we would like to thank for his tireless work on our behalf.
